In February I built my own agent harness, gonk, because Claude Code's first prompt was too large for the open-weights model on my desk. Since September it has processed about 4 billion tokens, mostly on GPUs in my house, and in October it wrote most of its own code. What I built, what I use it for, the case against it, and why owning the harness matters.
